Tattoo artist Billy and unemployed Nakos are best friends from Athens. Old bachelor Nakos is a racist, obsessed with the victim mentality, and he rages at Greece’s increasing immigrant numbers. Billy, however, is in favor of foreigners coming. They meet in Amerika Square in Athens because of Syrian refugee Tarek. Amerika Square is a controversial film about the Greek crisis of a few years before Brexit, which exposes the cracks in the EU from a Greek director’s point of view. The film vividly exposes the reality to those people who sometimes catch news headlines about the so-called Grexit crisis. For Nakos, Amerika Square holds childhood memories, so when he sees it crammed with refugees, he is infuriated and makes an extreme decision—but his shocking behavior comes right back at him. This is the director’s warning about far-right extremism, yet the ending suggests the reality of living together is tough. Amerika Square, a movie dealing with the significance of the refugee problem, is the timely second film by Yannis Sakaridis, director of Wild Duck, shown at Busan in 2013.(RHEE Souewon)
