Program Note
Buenos Aires in 1977 under military dictatorship. Francisco Sanctis, an office-dweller in his 40s, is only concerned about his long-awaited promotion. But what lies ahead of him is not promotion, but Elena, a friend from university who visits him after 20 years apart. She asks him to warn two men who are in imminent danger of being arrested by the army. When night falls, Sanctis is troubled as to whether or not he should take the risk for two complete strangers or ignore them.
The Long Night of Francisco Sanctis questions the political self-awareness and morality of a man who dreamed of revolution in his early days but now has become an ordinary office worker. This given task that could succeed or fail is indeed the driving force of the narrative. But as time goes by, what captures the audience is the amplified paranoia of Sanctis oscillating between political cause and fear, as well as the typical film noir style that delivers this paranoia audiovisually. Highlights of the film are the fully measured camerawork and lighting based on thorough historical research to recreate the era. (Jin PARK)
