As a Jehovah’s Witness, Giulia lives in a world shaped by a religion that strictly excludes outsiders, filled with restraint, pressure and scriptures. She falls in love with Libero, an ex-convict working for her father. Libero is a free spirit enjoying life to the fullest, and searching for unconditional love. He gives Giulia hope for the future. Their meeting becomes a turning point for Giulia, who decides to choose her own destiny and changes her life completely. Beginning with a powerful close-up of Giulia, Worldly Girl reflects the wonderful harmony between the director and the main actress. The discovery of Jehovah’s Witnesses through the story is quite interesting. It is also a coming-of-age film about a teenage girl breaking her mold and learning about life. As she has lived a life loyal to the words of the Bible, which preaches love, Giulia loves all the more purely. Sara Serraiocco makes her mark in Italian film with her portrayal of Giulia. The ironic scene where she pretends to be a Jehovah’s Witness while selling drugs becomes resonant imagery revealing the paradox of the character.(RHEE Souewon)
