Program Note
A solar storm hits a small village in Italy, causing power surges and blackouts, and people begin to act strangely. Another storm rages within Regina, a spinster referred to as Fräulein, when she allows a childlike sexagenarian to check into her hotel. The supposedly one-night stay is extended to two, then three days, and a turbulent coexistence begins.
Though this winter tale takes place in the modern day, various techniques turn it into a warm fairytale. And because these techniques are not visual spectacles or special effects but rather extremely simple, they create an atmosphere unique to this film. Among them is the omniscient narration throughout the film, which acts as a decisive factor making this ordinary story a fairytale. The extremely controlled directing of the solar storm is effective enough in convincing us of impossible situations, and the theme music has the strange effect of separating the film’s serious topic from reality and making it light. The controlled directorial skills of this up-and-coming director, who has the ability to create a fairytale-like reality, is more than noteworthy.(RHEE Souewon)
