Those from the Shore is a documentary about Armenian refugees living in Marseille, France, and demonstrates how France’s refugee policy operates with indifference. Some Armenians forced to leave their home to avoid imprisonment or death, are just waiting but no one can say how long they must wait or what will happen next. Receptionists at the asylum application center find faults in the applications and send them back, so even if they are received, the refugees have no idea when they will know the result. The home where they feel some sense of belonging is only in their hearts, and the land in which they find themselves doesn’t provide them with safe haven. Through deliberate incompetence and silence, they are forced to live as in-betweens; hovering between two countries and two separate lives, it is difficult for them to take hold of their lives at a time when they can do nothing but resist despair. The refugees’ abstract sense of place and anxiety is beautifully and poignantly illustrated through both abstract images of scenery and the orchestral strings musical score. (CHO Hyeyoung)
