Program Note
Xiao Zhang, the driver for a criminal gang, steals a million RMB from his boss. When his fiancée’s plastic surgery fails, he needs money for her to have it redone in Korea. His boss sends someone after him to recover the cash. In the process, many people on the make swarm like bees, and their desires collide with each other violently. Have a Nice Day shows to what lengths people will go to extort money on the desolate outskirts of China. Looking beyond the criminal act itself, the film fully reveals people’s blind ambition toward money and the backdrop of harsh reality they exist in. All of them have their own painful stories, dreams that have never been realized, or a situation that entangles them. Just like the devastated suburban landscape, in a world where the boundaries between good and evil are collapsing, everybody exposes their true nature, unleashing desire and violence to meet their own needs. This movie depicts the dark side of capitalistic structure, chasing Xiao Zhang for one night as he runs away with the money. (KIM Byeongcheol)
