Program Note
In the summer of 2000, a couple meets at the brightest point of their lives. The Last Verse follows their subsequent stormy 20 years. Ren-jie and Xiao-ping fall in love and promise each other the future together. Ren-jie, who is about to complete his military service, turns away his father who comes to visit. Soon, his father commits suicide, as he could not bear the pressure from creditors. Saddled with his father’s huge debt, Ren-jie’s life starts to fall apart. Not being able to adapt to the changes of the new century, he goes to China with the burden from his father. He leaves Xiao-ping for China, but there is no hope there, either. When he comes back, Xiao-ping welcomes him back, but their relationship comes to an expected end. What he has left is a happy moment from the picnic with Xiao-ping and his friends 20 years earlier, at the brightest moment of his youth. The story of lovers that started beautifully ends like a tragic poem, battered by bitter reality. (KIM Young-woo)
