Youngju, a professional swimmer with a serious alcohol problem, is fired from her job at the aquarium. Learning that a synchronized swimming coach is needed for a special program on Jeju Island, Youngju goes there. Her new job is to put together a performance plan under the theme “Jeju’s female divers meet synchronized swimming.” The village foreman, overly excited, distributes leaflets persuading the women divers to try the synchronized swimming, only to be ignored. One day, Youngju goes and competes at sea-diving with the head woman diver Okja. The condition is that the loser must do as the winner wants. After many twists and turns, women divers start trying out for the performance. Mermaid Unlimited deals with Jeju island’s traditional female divers attempts at synchronized swimming, and is a tale about the people who perform something special together, as encountered in films like The Full Monty, Swing Girls, or Hula Girls. Director O Muel grafts the female divers onto synchronized swimming in Mermaid Unlimited, imparting a strong and distinct flavor, full of local color, to the viewers.(NAM Dong-chul)
