Program Note
The documentary offers insights into revolution and history. Many documentaries on Lebanese politics explore the causes of the civil war, explain the relationship between religion and politics, and try to summarize its complicated factionalism. The film, however, considers two important labor movements in the early 1970s: the protest at a tobacco farm in southern Lebanon and the strike at a chocolate factory in Beirut. Though they started with the dream of a better life and a fair society, the protests ran aground and were forgotten due to the civil war. Saba makes use of various archival materials, and meets with the labor agitators of the time, intercutting key moments from the 70s’ labor movement with today. While comparing the two, Saba poses questions: why did the revolution fail? What are the prospects of changing today’s society? This film is unique in that it bluntly and straightforwardly reveals an ironic tragedy. The memories, dreams and loves as told by these old revolutionaries will resonate with us today. (CHO Hyeyoung)
