Program Note
Iranian actor Behrouz Vossoughi is, beyond a doubt, a legend. A star whose appeal crossed age, class and social boundaries, Vossoughi’s performances in nearly 100 films have been the gold standard for Iranian actors featuring just a handful of his iconic roles. But when the upheaval of 1979’s Islamic Revolution swept the country, Vossoughi and many of his peers were declared enemies of the state and forced into exile. Behrouz: A Legend on Screen is a rare chance to hear Vossoughi reflect on his struggles to adapt to life in the United States and the choice between continuing to practice his craft or staying silent to maintain his dignity—and legacy. Politics have conspired to ensure Vossoughi remains in exile to this day, a blow that Iranian cinema and culture has yet to recover from. Still a superstar at home, even though his last Iranian film came in 1978, Sepehr Mikaeilian chronicles the artist’s life and history, and by extension that of his homeland.
