Dejavu is Biju Viswanath′s
feature debut film after his participation in the PIFF with his short film
Voyage. David is imprisoned in a lighthouse on an isolated island because of
bad weather. As time goes by he is filled with loneliness, fear and hunger
leading to exhaustion. He longs for a friend in order to alleviate his
loneliness and luckily he gets an opportunity when he saves a bruised
stranger washed ashore. Despite the terrible condition of the stranger,
David vents his loneliness by speaking, one-way, to the helpless stranger.
Isolated for a long time on the island, David becomes isolated within
himself. With this feeling of isolation, David feels fear and anxiety at any
attempts at interference in his life. Consequently, David mistakes the
stranger as a murderer and kills him, only to then realize his mistake. The
film is mainly shot with extreme high and low angles, deftly using a
hand-held camera. It thus depicts the vulnerable human psyche from the
perspective of a person who is not able to accommodate anybody else but
himself and is only able to interpret human relationships as a threat. David
is, after great effort, able to embark on a ship, but finds the ship′s crew
to be very similar to the stranger he has previously killed. (Michelle
