A modern reinterpretation of the timeless Chinese classic Journey to the West. Sun Wuyuan is one of the toys on exhibit at a library. When the other toys refuse to admit that he is the king of monkeys because he doesn’t have Sun Wukong’s magic stick, Sun Wuyuan leaves on a quest to find it and prove himself. He finds the legendary king Sun Wukong on Mount Huaguo, but Sun Wukong will only lend him the magic stick if he becomes a disciple and undergoes hard training. Meanwhile, King Bull, who had goaded Sun Wuyuan on his quest, is actually a crony of Bull Demon King, an old nemesis of Sun Wukong who wants to steal the magic stick. Bull Demon King tries to drive a wedge between Sun Wukong and Son Wuyuan by lying to Sun Wuyuan. Thus begins an epic adventure to gain the magic stick and to protect it. Upon entering the world of animation in the early 90s, director Ma Xihai spent time learning various aspects of animation production and Chinese animation history. His first production boasts a strong storyline, characters popping with personality and powerful directing. (Huh Kyoung)
