Program Note
Wiji Thukul is a representative poet and human rights activist in Indonesia. At the end of Suharto′s regime in 1997-1998, numerous democratic fighters were killed or missing by the Suharto regime during a fierce democratic movement, and Wiji Thukkul also disappeared around this time. His then two-year-old son, Fajar Merah, formed a band with his friends in 2010 and performed songs using his father’s poetry as lyrics. And the songs gives comfort and healing power to Fajar himself and his family, as well as many Indonesian people who miss Wiji Thukul. And in the 2014 presidential election, Djokowi, who pledged to find out the truth about the victims of oppression under Suharto, is elected president. The Songa of Grassroots tells the complicated modern history of Indonesia, centered on Fajar and his family, as well as on Fajar’s songs those bring Wiji Thukul to the present. The long period of dictatorship and the resulting historical tragedy, the people who had to endure it with their whole body, and the music′s power to console them are expressed impressively.
