Program Note
Sofia surprises everyone by suddenly having contractions at a lunch celebrating her father and his partner’s new business. Her cousin Lena accompanies her to the hospital to help her with the childbirth, but this revelation has her family searching for the child’s father. Lena points to Omar, who denies it. The film begins with the Article 490 of the Moroccan Penal Code that any sexual relationship with the opposite sex out of wedlock in Morocco calls for a punishment of up to a year in prison. Sofia denounces the oppression and unfair discrimination towards women based on this clause. Sofia decides to resist such male-oriented social mores and reject the victimization traditional society demands from her. She takes the initiative to choose her own life. Paradoxically, the filmmaker also suggests that men are the victims of oppression within a social system that forces them to take responsibility. The outstanding performances from a great cast draw one into an in-depth exploration of the film’s theme. This film was showcased in Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard. (Erica Nam)
