Program Note
Ella works at her father′s restaurant where Abel comes by to deliver ingredients. Her simple, repetitive routine is shaken up by Abel’s spontaneous attitude. His provocations awaken her intrinsic passion and the two fall in love. Although she is drawn to his energy and passion, Abel′s obsession with gambling and money endanger their relationship. The film portrays the passionate love and ruin of a man and a woman. The rapid pacing in the first half creates a sense of speed and tension, suggesting that the relationship between the two is developing uncontrollably and that they are falling headlong into each other. The camera captures the charm of Tahar Rahim, who plays Abel to the fullest, encouraging us to fall in love with him even though we know he is a bad guy one can’t rely on. The actors′ outstanding performances and firm and skillful direction guarantee continued interest in the film. Treat Me Like Fire is Marie Monge’s feature debut film and was invited to Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival. (Erica Nam)
