Program Note
Jungsook is the owner of a travel agency and a workaholic who hates to lose. When her business is suspended because of one of her employees, Jungsook halfheartedly opens a call center for comfort women at the suggestion of the Busan Women Entrepreneurs Association. As she hears the stories of the comfort women, though, she feels ashamed, and convinces the victims to file a lawsuit against the Japanese government. Thus begins the lengthy trial that takes place between Busan and Shimonoseki for victims Bae Jungkil, Park Soonyeo, Seo Gwi-soon, and Lee Okju with the help of Korean-Japanese lawyer Lee Sang-il. Herstory follows the six hard years of trial from 1992 to 1998. Unlike other films that concentrate on reenacting the tragedy that took place for the comfort women, it keys on what comes “next.” The first half of the film develops the story at full speed, and then slows down to focus on the stories told by the victims in the courtroom. Herstory also roots for working women through the evolution of Jungsook. (Song Kyong Won)
