Program Note
Bhonsle comes from a noble class and stubbornly refuses to engage with other people. He’s a longtime veteran policeman, but lacks sympathy for others. One day, he gets new neighbors: a young woman and boy of the low Bihari class. On the day of the festival, he saves the young boy’s life which changes their relationship. It all starts with the unfamiliar first ‘thank you’ he receives, and before he realizes it, he becomes an ‘us’ with his neighbors. Unfortunately, for some seeking power, equality is a threat, and the young woman, victim of her weaker social position, is raped and beaten. Bhonsle uses violence to punish them, but unable to escape from the shackles of class, he meets his death. Everyone prays and stresses they are nothing before god, yet they build a tower of Babel, piling class on class to get closer to god. This film explores class ties and the violence in us through Bhonsle, a loner who meets his demise due to the violence that class and power inflicts upon him. (Jung Jin-a)
