Program Note
They Sing up on the Hill is a film that expands the perception of what Mongol means in the world. Instead of ambitiously revealing the whole of Mongolia, or the entirety of Ulaanbaatar, the film uses a peripheral tactic following ordinary young people who work part-time and play music in Ulaanbaatar so that we can feel the current situation of the city.
Od, the leader of a popular local band, is tired of life without changes and drops out of the band. He meets Gegee where he is working as a part-time interpreter. Gegee is a music lover, living and breathing music thanks to his family, which plays in a ballroom. After meeting Gegee, who enjoys life and music and communicates with society with proper responsibility, Od, who has lost the meaning of everything he′s been doing, carefully detects changes in his thoughts and returns to the band. Just like Once was a musical film that captured Dublin′s locality, this is a good music film that similarly captures Ulaanbaatar′s regionalism successfully. (Park Jinhee)
