Program Note
Cloud, Encore is a kind of "making-of film" about the filming of Im Kwon-taek’s 102nd film Revivre. Of course, as Gravity of the Tea was not a biographical film, neither is this one in the usual sense. Jung Sung-il used the expression "watching (the master’s film-making secret)", which does not mean simply to stare at the distance quietly. In a sense, Cloud, Encore is a record of efforts made to discover the best position and angle to see the ′secret′ properly. Through cross-cutting, we see the ins and outs of the movie being filmed, and the juxtaposition of Im Kwon-taek when he is highly concentrated and when he is dozing off at the corner of the set. What we appreciate most is that, the movie, a combination of two movies (or one movie composed of 2 parts), makes us realize that when the cliché ‘life is a dream and a passing cloud’ is seen through the lens of an artist, it can be a profound expression that holds new and unique sentiments.
