Program Note
Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days is the second installment of the film series based on the eponymous webtoon. After his death in part one, Soo-hong is declared as the 49th noble man and grim reaper Gang-rim is called to trial to defend this. Meanwhile, grim reapers Haewonmak and Deok-choon try to bring an old man to the afterlife, but are stopped by the man’s guardian Seongjushin, who tells them about their pasts 1,000 years ago and compels them to realize that the three grim reapers are fated to be together. While part one was akin to a journey into the afterlife designed through computer graphics, part two is more a journey into the hidden past. The first entry was empowered by a mother’s affection and tears, the second calmly sets the story up for the audience. While first we were bombarded with amazing visuals, the missing pieces are now filled in with enriched drama. It is a clever outcome designed with the audience in mind in all aspects including acting, directing, and visuals. (Song Kyong Won)
