Program Note
Okinawa, the southernmost island of Japan, where the U.S. military base is currently stationed, served as a defense line to defend Japan from the Allies at the end of World War II. It is also the place where 200,000 Japanese lost their lives after the Allied Forces landed and fought the famous Okinawa battle. Behind the battle, well-known throughout history, there was a secret battle that did not officially exist anywhere in Japanese history. The main units of the secret warfare, deploying the guerilla tactics, consisted of young boy soldiers in their early teens, the epidemic of malaria, and civilians who killed other civilians. It all stemmed from a conspiracy designed by a young elite officer who just graduated from the mysterious ‘Nagano School’. The documentary, Boy Soldiers: The Secret War in Okinawa, finds and links up the hidden secrets to reveal the historical tragedy that the Japanese government is hiding. This is to break the taboo behind the battle of Okinawa and to sound a wake-up call on Japan′s latest attempt to remilitarization.
