Program Note
At a time when everyone is worried that the end of humanity is approaching, the president of a company is going on a picnic with his staff on a futuristic tour bus that can run on water. The main character, played by director Huang Bo, is thrilled to find out that he won first prize in the lottery. Ironically, however, a tsunami hits on the best day of his life, and even the bus that runs on water is swept away by the wave. It lands on an uninhabited island. This place, disconnected from the outside world, becomes a battleground for survival and a new experimental place in human history. It is Chinese superstar Huang’s directorial debut, and it combines realism, fantasy, and humor in a stark process where humans in extreme situations try to form a group, seek leadership, and even struggle for power to survive. Shu Qi, a Taiwanese actress beloved by Korean audiences who starred in Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s Millennium Mambo, Three Times, and The Assassin co-stars with Lay of EXO. (Sung Jihae)
