Program Note
The sixties and seventies were the Golden Age of Wakamatsu Production, established by Wakamatsu Koji, the master of the pink film genre and one of the leading Japanese directors of his time. The company was well known for its erotic and revolutionary content, and many young emerging filmmakers joined the company. Among them Megumi embraced the challenge of being a female assistant director to Wakamatsu. Her beginnings seemed humble, delivering lunch boxes to the crew and filling empty glasses at drinking parties, but she slowly evolved as a filmmaker as well as a human being. In 2012, the Busan International Film Festival acknowledged Wakamatsu’s lifetime dedication to film with the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award and showcased his major works. Less than two weeks after the award ceremony, he abruptly passed away after being hit by a taxi in Tokyo. This biopic of the great master is fittingly directed by Shiraishi Kazuya, who himself worked under Wakamatsu. Their passion for cinema and experimental spirit of the past is deftly translated across the screen. (Karen Park)
