Program Note
The truck driver in this movie runs on a vast plateau, but stops twice. By mistake, he hits a sheep walking by and loads the dead, bleeding animal onto his truck. Next, he picks up a young hitchhiker who walks in the sun. While talking to the hitchhiker, the driver notices a sharp knife hidden in his clothes. The truck driver drops him off near his destination, carrying a knife to kill someone for revenge. Then, he runs to the temple to rest the dead sheep′s soul and uses his money for the ritual. His ordinary day is smeared by two deaths and Pema Tseden’s movie world is completed by the mixture of nobility, ugliness, everyday life, and fantastical fable. It’s a new film by Tseden, a representative Tibetan director, which was filmed in Tibet, in Tibetan languages. The director here conversely neuters the fixed idea about Tibet, which symbolizes that the desires we want to grasp are fading away somewhere. He also shows the daily lives of Tibetans toggling between desires and transcendent will. (Sung Jihae)
