Program Note
Eleven-year-old Warda is the fourth generation of Palestinian refugee living in a building in Lebanon with her family and relatives. Her great-grandfather, upon learning that he does not have much longer to live, one day gives Warda a will-like assignment: “you must look to the past to find the future.” Warda begins to ascend the building floor by floor, asking each relative living on the floors about their homeland, Palestine. Thus begins Warda’s journey into the past. The Tower begins with the story of Warda’s family, and continues to reconstruct decades of Palestinian history from the perspective of each generation. These stories are based on interviews with actual Palestinian refugees living in Lebanese refugee camps. What makes living in the refugee camp bearable is the love, hope, and fellowship among the families.
