Program Note
Namdev, a limousine driver in his 60s, is tired of his life in Mumbai. Not only is city life itself complicated, but his wife and daughter are always asking him to do things at home and his employer is constantly berating him. Tired of a city that is never quiet, Namdev up and leaves with one suitcase. He is happy just at the thought of finding “Silent Valley,” but finds that everywhere he goes, there are always people around. To make matters worse, a 12-year-old boy looking for his parents begins to follow him, endlessly chattering away. The film is at once a depressing road movie about a man looking for silence and a comic buddy movie about the discord between a man and a boy. The intimate camera following the characters and the long shots of the beautiful backcountry switch up to provide visual diversity. The emotional line moves from resignation and anger to solidarity and friendship, then finally to a warm smile. Meanwhile social critiques surrounding gender and class distinctions are woven throughout the film. (Jeong Minah)
