The film Sibel shows male-centered values dominating a community and woman’s dependency on gender roles. However, the seemingly extreme values of confrontation between the two genders are given a multi-layered, three-dimensional feel by broader symbols under the portrayal and actions of the characters on the surface. Sibel′s powerful presence in the native language of whistling is not only expressed by strong femininity but also by the fundamental nature of being indistinguishable from the two genders. Though less fragmented than a language, the whistle that has a ripple effect across a whole mountain is an important tool that provides auditory abundance throughout the entire film, as well as a sensory exchange of transcendence with properties beyond the boundary. As the story proceeds, the fundamental message of the film, the criticism of the repressive culture on women, reveals that the bans and fear of exclusionary mechanisms are insubstantial. It also shows the ugly face the weak desires the male-centered values have, which exclude the other to secure their position in the institutional classification. (Suan Seo)
