Program Note
An omnibus film led by world renowned Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf along with three young female directors he met though the workshop “Films that Change Society”. These stories were produced around the theme of children and education. First off is the story of Themba from South Africa. He hardly has any time to study because of his house chores, but still wants to excel in school, so he finishes his homework even though he dozes off a dozen times while doing it. The second story is about Ecuadorian girl Manuela. She wants to learn to write and become a children’s author, but must help grandfather with fishing to make money. She also discovers a way to make money for herself, but that makes it even more difficult for her to start attending school. Our last character is Ismael from Colombia. Now an old man, he never quite got over the fact that he had to work the fields instead of going to school when he was young. These three tell us educational stories that are also valiant and cheerful. (Huh Kyoung)
