Program Note
Korean traditional musical Kokdu was put on stage by the director Kim Tae-yong and the music director Bang Junsuk in 2017. Kokdu is someone who consoles and leads the dead to the underworld. The story is about four Kokdus who protect boy and his sister who were sent to the underworld by mistake. It was inserted in the musical performance in the form of a short film. When the musical made a huge success with the splendor of dramatic song and dance, director Kim decided to turn the performance into a film. This film employs book in book structure of the performance itself and shows both the preparation process and the actual performance itself. The two directors showcased Shin Sang-ok’s Seong Chunhyang, with pansori performance in 2016 at Muju Film Festival, and in 2017 they directed Reggae inna Film, Heungbu, which is based on the stop motion animation Heungbu and Nolbu (1967). Kokdu: A Story of Guardian Angels will be screened only once together with the performance of the National Gukak Center’s performance. (Nam Dong-chul)
