The second feature by Polish director, Agnieszka Smoczynska, who attracted the world′s attention with her directing debut, The Lure. Alicia, who doesn′t even remember her real name, is sent to jail for assault. Two years later, Alicia appears on a television show to find out who she is and a family calling her ‘Kinga’ appear. She returns home with her husband and little son but refuses to be identified as the wife and mother her family expects. The family is unfamiliar with this Alicia, and the son even considers her to be an intruder. The film does not focus on identifying the real character of Kinga, who is said to have been a good-natured daughter and a perfect mother. Instead, the movie focuses on the alienation of Alicia, who suffers from identity dysphoria through expressions such as a brain scan sprouting buds while strange music fills the background. Alicia gradually builds a friendship with her son and makes emotional connections, but does not return to her mother′s identity. This raises fundamental questions about maternal instincts.
