Program Note
Adam and Evelyn live a peaceful life in East Germany in 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. As they plan for a vacation together, Evelyn suspects Adam is cheating on her and leaves for Hungary with her friends without Adam, who goes after her. On his way, Adam secretly helps a woman move to the West. And the couple now has a decision to make. Will they leave their hometown and head West for their future, or will they remain where they are? Based on the same titled novel by Ingo Schulze, Adam & Evelyn portrays ordinary Germans living the last days of the Cold War. The film does not propose a decisive moment or motive for the couple’s decision to move. Instead, it repeatedly pictures the two in various landscapes such as their home, garden, and pastoral country lane, as a way to visually emphasize that they must leave their hometown as reservoir of personal memories. The film was premiered at this year’s Venice International Film Critics Week. (Jin Park)
