Program Note
Eve works as a maid for the finest hotel in Mexico City. In microscopic detail, the film observes Eve as she cleans the rooms vacated by the guests, makes their beds, and refills bathroom amenities. Oftentimes she finds things left behind by guests. At times she performs special requests by some guests. But overall, her daily life is made up dull moments between anonymous guests and hotel rooms. The hotel seems like a compact representation of Mexican society and The Chambermaid, Lila Avilles’ feature debut, constantly reminds us of its social and class distinctions by contrasting Eve at the bottom of the totem pole with other hotel employees and guests. Meanwhile the camera is persistently and exquisitely capturing Eve’s workday, allowing the audience to view her labor from this dry yet inviting perspective. The end of the film, when Eve leaves the hotel after she learned what happened to her promotion, looks a commentary on the reality of female labors today. (Jin Park)
