Program Note
Olivier is a manager at the central warehouse for a major online retailer living with his wife and two children. He is well respected at work and a good leader who helps his co-workers as much as he can. One day, his wife inexplicably disappears and things begin to unravel. When a co-worker whom he had to fire commits suicide, his life comes spiraling down on him. He somehow survives day to day with the help of his sister and friends, but his responsibilities at work and home slowly begin to crush him. Our Struggles, Guillaume Senez’s second feature, is a traditional drama depicting a laborer facing crises in his private and public life. It is most interesting to watch how Olivier’s secondary problems of housework and childcare are just as burdensome to him as his primary work outside the home. Though he is no hero overcoming his crises, the film never loses humanistic hope. Life’s struggle is in the present tense—there is no perfect loss or perfect hope. (Jin Park)
