Celeste is a retired teacher working as a guide at a planetarium. Her dull life gains unexpected adventure when the government makes the surprising announcement that there are aliens living on Earth. The aliens plan to return to their planet and are extending invitations to a few chosen ones from earth to come along with them. Celeste recalls her strange Russian neighbor Pauline, and discovers that she has invited her on this journey. Deciding to take her up on this offer, Celeste gets on the train to prepare for space travel. Extraordinary Journey of Celeste Garcia, Arturo Infante’s debut film, is attention grabbing simply for its unique topic of space travel by a middle-aged woman. Though based on science fiction imagination, the film is rather a bittersweet comedy about people who want to leave reality behind and a subtle critique of the Cuban government and society. In the end, the extraordinary journey ends with Celeste finding happiness and imbuing the audience with endless positivity and energy of life. (Jin Park)
