Program Note
Kena is a girl who hangs out with the local guys. One day, she meets Ziki and starts having special feelings toward her. Their relationship develops into love, but in a small town in Nairobi, secrecy is a luxury. The two have to be even more cautious as their fathers are rival candidates in the parliamentary elections. In a village dominated by traditional values, the special relationship between the two women is soon the topic on everyone’s tongue, eventually forcing them to break up. Time goes by and they meet again after achieving their dreams. A film about growing pains, it expresses the emotions of two excited and loving girls excellently. The film also confronts human rights, prejudice and community discrimination against homosexuals. It has been banned from screening in Kenya because of its homosexual content. It is the second feature film directed by Wanuri Kahiu and screened in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes Film Festival. (Erica Nam)
