Program Note
Chou lives a peaceful life with her husband and 4-year-old son in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia. Then comes the madness of the Khmer Rouge of 1975, and she must take an escape with her family. While on a forced march, she loses her hold on her boy’s hand, and is sent to a concentration camp without him. She endures the nightmares of concentration camp life, kept going only by the hope of finding her son again. Funan, which won the Cristal at the 2018 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, is a story about the strength of a mother surviving the atrocities of barbarism on the hope of reuniting with her family. It is the debut feature by Denis Do, who is French with a Cambodian-Chinese background. His cultural and ethnic background is deeply entrenched in all his films, even his shorts. Funan is no exception and is based on a real story told by his mother. (Huh Kyoung)
