Program Note
In Malaysia, where horror and comedy are the dominant film genres, this is a relatively non-mainstream crime thriller: Zahir Omar’s energetic debut feature depicts the dark criminal world of Kuala Lumpur. Four taxi drivers of various ages commit various small and large crimes against their passengers in order to pay off their debts. As their greed grows, the crimes become bolder. They become more and more violent when their criminal activities come in contact with an upper-class couple in the middle of an affair, a real gang organization, and the police who get a whiff of their activities. The drama and action are intertwined in an exciting progression. Violence and crime culminate in tragedy, yet in this exposé of the cruel city, someone gets lucky. The mysterious police, criminals with an excuse, a woman full of love and vengeance… the typical character lineup seems to point to a predictable plot, but the tension in the drama is elevated through the various criminal acts and the brutal action scenes in the dark.
