Program Note
Director Alonso Ruizpalacios returns with Museum following his breakout debut, Gueros (2014). Inspired from a real event—the heist that occurred at Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology in 1985, the film shows Juan living under the roof of his rich doctor father, putting off graduation as long as he can. He and his friend Wilson decide to steal an ancient artifact from the museum. Though the two are quite the bumbling pair, their plan for the heist is meticulously detailed and they are successful. The two “losers” seem to be in a brilliantly comical heist that soon turns into a family drama and black comedy, wrapped in sentimental images that have the retro feel of the 1980s. The various interests and styles could have easily been a distraction, but the director brings it all together in a sophisticated production, leaving us thirsting for more. Gael García Bernal joins the cast and executive produces the film, which won the Best Script Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2018. (Jin Park)
