Program Note
Zhouqing, who quit school to help his poor household meets Juhlai, a train conducter in a boiler room at the cargo train station, and they become fast friends. One day Zhouqing gets hit by a truck, badly injuring his leg. Julai makes a donation from his leg bone when Zhouqing has his leg operated on. When Zhouqing returns after three years in Germany, he plays the guitar in a band to earn money. But he soon tires of it and quits. He looks for Juhlai, the intellectual mentor of his youth. One gets to choose whether to follow the established generation`s traditions or to refuse them. This motive of “succession and refusal” made the director and the producer firmly believe that the audience could identify with the film. Juhlai is an idol, and also a spiritual paramita for the main character Zhouqing. This is satisfactory for rousing human desires in seeking dignity in an era where values have been lost. The audience will acquire resources for life through this instinct for return. (production notes)
