Filmmaker PARK Hong-yeol once played the part of a man in black who washes windows in HONG Sang-soo’s On the Beach at Night Alone. Reenacting the scene in several different ways, PARK jokes that he began working on this documentary to make a ‘film that acts as a window into the world.’ And the person that he highlights through this window into the world is his friend of 24 years—CHO Yeong-gwon. A politician of the Justice Party, CHO lost three elections and is preparing for his fourth attempt. With a friendly gaze, This Is Not a Documentary 2 captures the process of an election campaign of a candidate from a poor progressive party, who threw in his gauntlet in the Korean elections, which are controlled by money. Instead of the candidate’s pledges or serious political vision, the film is full of scenes that capture his simple life, hard-working days, and loose humor. Throughout the film, CHO takes things as they come in his quiet, free life. He gives us hope and optimism that progress does happen, albeit slowly past numerous bends. This is the reason this film about a politician’s unsuccessful election campaign is not a record of failure. In the second half of the film, the late Assemblyman ROH Hoe-chan appears in the film, flooding the hearts of Koreans with emotions. (KANG Sowon)
