Program Note
This is the feature debut of Lam Oi-Wah, who worked as a teacher, and then a talented screenwriter. It is a love story that presents the tensions between man and woman with superb psychological articulations. On Christmas night, Jeannie finds out that her boyfriend is dating another woman, and becomes depressed. Her boyfriend asks his friend, Alan, to take her home. The two, who had been comforting each other, come to believe that it was ′fate′ that brought them together and they fall in love. However, after 12 nights, they experience a change in their relationship. They become disillusioned with their ideas of love, and furthermore, truth. Lam Oi-Wah maintains a delicate sketch of the psychological changes that happen to Jeannie and Alan, describing the fundamental loneliness and sense of alienation that defines existence. However, the filmmaker does not rely on a negative conclusion, but instead points out that this is precisely the reason why people must depend on each other. (Kim Ji-Seok)
