Program Note
In Hong Kong, an industrialized and ultramodern city, youngsters do not take life seriously, the conditions of education and family is pernicious, values are disregarded, and alienation rules. The life of teenagers in Hong Kong is contrasted to what Mao calls ′hope′ heard through the radio in Hong Kong from mainland China. <Made in Hong Kong> is an elegy the Hong Kong right before its return to China. The film, using the gangster genre convention, depicts the life, love, hope, and friendship of the three characters: Ah Chu who is employed in a violent gang, a girl named Ping who suffers from incurable heart disease, and the physically and mentally handicapped Ah Long. The film captures in the audience with naive but beautiful days of the teenagers by these elements: the three of them sing "Oh Susanna" while playing at a cemetery where they can look down the city; the ask why people die uselessly and without love and care, and Ah Chu′s long, lonely, and heart-breaking voice over narration throughout the film adds poignancy. <Made in Hong Kong> employs documentary strategy but achieves a formal beauty with poetic and literary sensibility. The soundtrack is sophisticated and he narrative is skillfully constructed while freely cutting across time. It is remarkable that this extraordinary film is a low budget independent debut feature with an amateur cast.
