Program Note
A strange yet intellectual horror film, Sorum is a chilling tale about a group of people confined by bad karma; revenge, transference of sin and guilt, and a brutal murder. 30 years ago a man killed his wife and set fire to the house, leaving a survivor, Yong-Hyun, the couple′s son. Sun-Young is the daughter born to the murderer′s mistress. Sun-Young, who lost her child, kills her abusive husband. The stepbrother and sister conspire to hide the husband′s dead body. Ignorant of their familial relationship, they soon become lovers. As in the ′gothic novels′ of the West, the dark lighting and the notion of space creates claustrophobic compositions that maximize the eerie landscape. Furthermore, the chain of fate the characters are tied to creates a sense of the uncanny and a brooding sense of unease. (Joo You-Shin)
