Kurdish director Shawkat Amin Korki won the New Currents Award at BIFF with his film Kick Off (2009). His latest work The Exam, which comes after a long hiatus since Memories on Stone (2014), was invited to compete at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It features a woman who is unsatisfied with her life, married to a conservative husband. Hoping for her younger sister to avoid such a miserable marriage, she is willing to do anything to help her sister get into a university. Eventually the woman becomes involved in an organized cheating scheme. She thinks it will be as simple as telling her younger sister about how to cheat on the exam, but the situation worsens from there on. Her actions are well meant, but a cheating scheme that rocks the entire society cannot be forgiven. The film shows a person taking the worse path at a crossroads—a social tragedy brought on by the wish for others to have a better life than herself. (NAM Dong-chul)
