Program Note
1917 (2019) is the first to come to mind when discussing films that were completed without cuts. To amplify the realness of war, the entire movie is in one shot—it was filmed in uncut takes that are seamlessly connected to look like one continuous shot. The Absent Director is also a one-shot film. It’s not a war movie, but the technique makes the story more vivid and immersive. The film seamlessly fuses the past and the present in a single shot, doubling the density of the story, which takes place in a stage director’s house. The members of a theater company get together there to rehearse Macbeth, which they wish to submit to the Edinburgh Theater Festival. The problem is that the director is not home—he instructs the actors through video calls on his cellphone. Chaos ensues as actors complain about the director’s criticisms and the rehearsal falls apart. (NAM Dong-chul)
