Program Note
Love at first sight—romantic yet unrealistic—and yet that is how all great romances begin. Alexandre Koberidze's What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? is no exception. It is the story of Lisa and Giorgi, their first encounter, their budding romance, and their love tested, whispered in muted imagery like that of a fairy tale. The couple's faces change overnight, they lose their jobs, their town celebrates the World Cup, and life goes on. As the camera wanders the mundane streets where nothing extraordinary happens we see such everyday events as a stray dog passing by, and the loose-knit drama makes viewers wonder if the director has lost interest in "happily ever after." Eventually fate intervenes and the protagonists are delicately and playfully poised to find true love. Charming, magical and delightful, this is must-see for the hopelessly romantic at heart.
