Program Note
Returning to Reims (Fragments) is an adaptation of sociologist Didier Eribon’s memoirs, composed as he traveled to his hometown when his father fell ill. A rising star, Adèle Haenel, narrates Eribon′s voice and documentary director Jean-Gabriel Périot presents video footage from numerous films and archival materials. The film consists of two chapters and a short epilogue. The first chapter approaches the social, class, and labor issues in pre- and post-war France from various perspectives, while the second chapter contemplates the socio-political changes that the public has showed in the midst of the confrontation between the left- and right-wing parties since the 1960s. The film does not bring the issues of sexual identity from the original story, but focuses rather on those of social class. The film is a challenging one, but rewarding, to those who devote their attention to it. (LEE Yong cheol)
