Program Note
A young man named Takeshi arrives at a small fishing village. He gets a job at a squid cannery and moves into an old apartment with the help of the cannery owner. Takeshi’s monotonous life is interrupted by a visit from his neighbor, Kozo, who barges in to use Takeshi’s bathtub. Takeshi begrudgingly learns to live as Kozo’s neighbor, but soon the news of his father’s death shakes up his life. Ogigami Naoko, who became famous for Kamome Diner (2006) and Close-Knit (2017), has made calming and comforting films using various elements of daily life. Characteristic of her style, Riverside Mukolitta has a prominent "minimalistic" aspect, as expressed in Kozo’s words. Instead of loud and flashy things that dazzle your eyes and ears, this film will open your eyes to the beauty of small and trivial things, such as the chirping of grasshoppers or the taste of fresh summer vegetables.
