Program Note
Asteroid follows Ebrahim, a poor boy who works all day to care for his mother and younger siblings, and discovers a saintly aura in his efforts. A film that joins a long line of outstanding Iranian films about children, alongside Abbas Kiarostami’s Where Is the Friend’s Home (1987) and Majid Majidi’s Children of Heaven (1997), it is the first feature film made by a director who has edited numerous films and TV series. About the inspiration for the film, the director said: "When one of my friends was shooting in the desert, I met Ebrahim for the first time. In a village where its inhabitants had not even registered for their national IDs, there was a little boy who did not know anything about life but working. I came back to Tehran but never managed to stop thinking of his story. So I began writing a script about a boy like Ebrahim." The film was premiered at the 2021 Fajr International Film Festival and won the Best Film Award in the Eastern Vista section. (NAM Dong-chul)
