Program Note
Rehana, who works as a teaching assistant at medical school, is a single mother to Emu, who attends elementary school. Her unemployed younger brother forgets to pick up Emu or gets into trouble, while Rehana gets insulin shots and busily prepares for her upcoming exams. One day, while proctoring an exam for undergrads, Rehana kicks Mimi out for cheating, and Annie protests to her action. Later she witnesses Annie emerge from her advisor Arefin′s office, and she begins a fight without any support. Rehana, which was selected for APM 2018 and the Un Certain Regard section or this year′s Cannes Film Festival, is an astonishing film by director Abdullah Mohammad Saad. The screen steeped in blue light helps to push the "Me Too" movement in a religious society and the conservative academia, social absurdities, Rehana′s pain as a working mom, and Emu′s struggles into a powerful narrative.
